Shillong (Meghalaya), May 24 : The Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) tribunal has upheld the ban on the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), a Meghalaya-based insurgent group, for another five years. The ban, effective from November 13, 2024, was confirmed by the tribunal headed by Justice Saumitra Saikia, citing sufficient evidence of the outfit’s involvement in violent activities and threats to national security.
The Centre’s decision to extend the ban was supported by substantial evidence, leading the tribunal to conclude that HNLC’s activities posed a threat to India’s sovereignty. The ban’s extension is expected to further disrupt HNLC’s operations, limiting their ability to engage in unlawful activities.
The government’s crackdown on HNLC underscores its commitment to maintaining law and order in Meghalaya and tackling insurgency in the region. The move is seen as a step towards ensuring peace and stability in the state.
