New Delhi, June 25: The Congress on Thursday cornered the Centre over the status of passports as proof of citizenship, demanding an official clarification after an MEA official described it as primarily a travel document.
“Under the Passport Act, only bonafide Indian citizens get passports. If it’s not proof of citizenship, the MEA must say so,” said Assam MP and Deputy LoP Gaurav Gogoi.
Referring to Assam’s NRC ordeal, Gogoi added: “Voter ID, PAN, Aadhaar, now passport — the Centre keeps saying these aren’t proof. Is NRC listing the only proof left?”
The row began at a Passport Seva Divas event where an official said passports should be seen as travel documents.
