Imphal (Manipur), May 25: Thousands of protesters marched towards Raj Bhavan in Imphal on Sunday afternoon, demanding an apology from Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla over alleged remarks insulting Manipur’s identity. The protesters, responding to a call by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), gathered at Khwairamband and took out a rally before being stopped by security forces near Kangla Gate.
Security forces fired several rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the crowd, resulting in minor injuries to over five women. A protester expressed frustration, stating that the Governor’s silence was disregarding the sentiments of the people and humiliating the state’s historical and cultural legacy.
The incident highlights the growing tensions between the protesters and the state administration, with the community demanding respect and recognition for Manipur’s identity.
