Shillong (Meghalaya), May 15: Meghalaya launches the first phase of Census 2027 on May 16, rolling out a month-long digital House Listing and Housing Census across all 12 districts with 8,309 enumerators and supervisors on the ground.
Director of Census Operations Biswajit Pegu said 9,950 House Listing Blocks will be covered by June 14, capturing data on housing, drinking water, sanitation, amenities, and assets. The exercise goes fully digital, with enumerators using a mobile app under the “Bring Your Own Device” system for real-time accuracy and monitoring.
The state has already geo-tagged and demarcated 100% of HLBs across 7,428 villages and 9 towns. East Khasi Hills leads with 2,159 blocks, followed by West Garo Hills at 1,488.
The Self-Enumeration portal, open since May 1, shuts at midnight tonight. West Khasi Hills saw the highest public entries, with East Khasi Hills and West Garo Hills next. All self-filed data will be physically verified by enumerators during house visits before final upload.
Enumerators will first map boundaries, mark landmarks, and number buildings before starting door-to-door surveys. Offline collection is enabled for poor-network zones.
Calling it the foundation of Census 2027, Pegu urged citizens to cooperate: “Accurate data means better planning, welfare delivery, and development for Meghalaya.”
