Shillong (Meghalaya), May 16: East Khasi Hills Police will exhume the body of victim Trophimos Khongmawloh, 30, for post-mortem after a court order, SP Vivek Syiem said Thursday. The date is awaited from the SDO of Pynursla Civil Sub-Division.
Police say Trophimos was allegedly tortured and killed on the night of April 7, 2026, at Punter village. The FIR filed May 7 by his father Netnobiweit Khongsdong claims he was forced to eat glass before being beaten. The incident did not take place inside the village, police added.
According to an eyewitness, a group of 7–8 VDP volunteers, in the presence of headman Fullmon Khongsodh, tortured and killed him. The case names the headman and VDP members. A murder case has been registered.
Trophimos’s father told South Asia Views, he only came to know about his son’s death after seeing the video.
Syiem said 11 suspects have secured anticipatory bail to avoid arrest. He warned VDP members against vigilantism: “Disciplining a person cannot justify actions leading to death. No one has the right to enforce the law on their own.”
