Williamnagar(Meghalaya), Feb 13: In a bid to boost local entrepreneurship and showcase indigenous handicrafts, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today inaugurated the District Emporium at the District Commerce & Industries Centre (DCIC) here. The emporium is expected to provide a much-needed platform for local artisans, entrepreneurs, and small businesses to display and market their products.
Speaking at the event, Sangma highlighted the urgent need to create large-scale livelihood opportunities for the state’s youth, citing the alarming gap between the number of young people entering the workforce and available government job vacancies. He emphasized the importance of adopting an entrepreneurial mindset and taking calculated risks, pointing to growing opportunities in tourism.
The emporium is part of the government’s efforts to promote local enterprise and is expected to enhance livelihoods and generate employment opportunities. Minister Marcuise N. Marak described the initiative as a significant boost for Williamnagar, providing visibility and market access for local producers.
The event was marked by a musical performance by DCIC trainees and concluded with a vote of thanks. As Meghalaya strives to become a 10-billion-dollar economy, initiatives like the District Emporium are seen as crucial steps towards achieving this goal.
