Shillong ( Meghalaya), May 21 : A massive fire broke out at the Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian Girls Higher Secondary school in Mawkhar locality at 2 am on Sunday , May 21 , reducing the heritage building to ashes.
Considered to be a monumental structure, the woodwork frame of the school building built in the late 1800s .
According to reports , no causalities have been reported as of now and police are investigating the reason behind the fire .
Several visuals of the iconic building getting reduced to ashes in circulating in the social media platforms ,leaving the netizens in complete shock .
State Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has expressed his distress after learning about the tragic fire incident at one of the oldest schools of the state .

Meanwhile ,those residing in the hostel adjacent building are all safe and have been temporarily shifted to the community hall of Mission Compound locality.
Being the only school for girls in the Northeast over a century ago, the KJP Girls’ Higher Secondary School celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2017.
KJP Girls ‘School became an exclusive school for girls in 1892 when a missionary of the Welsh Presbyterian Mission Society took over the administration of the school.
