Shillong, July 25 : Lady Keane College, one of Meghalaya’s premier institutions for women’s education, marked its 91st Foundation Day on Friday under the theme “Building Tomorrow with 91 Years of Legacy.”
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui graced the occasion as Chief Guest, alongside Smt. H.B.D. Sangma, Director of Higher & Technical Education, Governing Board members, alumni, faculty, students and staff.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Rymbui called the college “a symbol of excellence” that has shaped generations of women leaders across Meghalaya and the Northeast. He urged students to balance ambition with patience and discipline in an age of AI, smartphones and instant information.
“Technology has changed how we communicate, but the need to deliver meaningful messages remains. Use it responsibly, safeguard your mental health, and think critically,” he said, adding that the government remains committed to investing in education and youth innovation.
DHTE Director Smt. H.B.D. Sangma described Lady Keane as a “beacon of excellence.” She encouraged students to move beyond classrooms and embrace creativity, entrepreneurship and emerging technologies.
“Qualifications open doors, but character, competence and lifelong learning decide success,” she said. She also asked students to respect teachers and parents, preserve the environment, and take pride in Meghalaya’s culture.
The Minister released three publications — the College Magazine, _Keanean Journal of Arts, and the Annual History Magazine.
The day also saw awards for excellence in Research Publications, Meritorious HS Students, Student Cells, PWD Cell, Fashion Design, and Co-curricular and Extra-Curricular Activities. Cultural performances by students reflected the college’s talent and heritage.
As it nears its centenary, the college reaffirmed its mission to empower young women and nurture responsible citizens for Meghalaya and the nation.
