Shillong (Meghalaya), June 7: A magnitude 5.3 earthquake shook parts of Northeast India on Sunday late evening, with tremors also felt across Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal and China.
The quake struck at around 11:06 pm IST, with the strongest shaking reported from Punakha in Bhutan. Residents in Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim and North Bengal said they felt a sudden jolt followed by 10-15 seconds of rolling motion. In Shillong and Guwahati, residents were seen rushing out of their houses as ceiling fans swayed and windows rattled. Some households reported books and kitchen items falling from shelves.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in Northeast India. Local authorities said they were monitoring for aftershocks.
The eastern Himalayan region is seismically active, and quakes of this magnitude are often felt across borders in Bhutan, Northeast India, Bangladesh, Nepal and southern Tibet due to the geology of the area.
The National Centre for Seismology and Bhutan’s Department of Geology and Mines are expected to release details on the epicenter, depth and aftershock data shortly.
