Shillong, Aug 31: Amid growing speculations over the preparedness of 9 UDP MLAs’ move to join BJP, the regional party leadership in Shillong on Monday said that none of 12 MLAs are in a mood to merge into the main ruling party at the Centre.
Talking to media, UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh on Monday asserted that all 12 UDP MLAs remain with the party and are currently in Meghalaya.
“As of now the party is intact. There is no doubt about it. I myself have spoken to all MLAs. I heard all these speculations this only from the media,” he said.
He further rejected reports that UDP legislators had travelled to New Delhi recently where they negotiated a merger with the BJP leadership.
He said that he remained in Shillong throughout the week and had travelled to New Delhi on Monday for an official programme.
He made it plain and simple that 9 UDP MLAs had earlier met Union Home Minister Amit Shah over proposed amendments to the FCRA, but the meeting had subsequently been interpreted as a political exercise.
He said none of these MLAs have been camping in Guwahati or Kolkata to discuss the merger issue with top BJP leadership.
According to him, Pius Marwein, Balajied Synrem, Kyrmen Shylla and Shynshar Lyngdoh travelled to Kolkata on Saturday for personal business. Other legislators, including B Kurbah, Olan Sing Suin and Lahkmen Rymbui, he said, were in Shillong only.
