Shillong (Meghalaya), Mar 18: A devastating incident of food poisoning has claimed the life of another student, Namebantie Marwein, in Karnataka’s Mandya District, bringing the death toll to 2. This tragic event occurred at an illegally run hostel, where students were served leftover food during Holi celebrations on March 14.
Namebantie, a resident of West Khasi Hills, was initially admitted to Malavalli Government Hospital but was later shifted to Apollo Hospital in Mysuru, where he passed away on Monday night. This incident comes on the heels of another student, Khrehlang Khongtani from East Khasi Hills, who died on March 16 due to food poisoning.
The Commissioner and Secretary Home CVD Diengdoh, accompanied by the Deputy Commissioner of Mandya, visited the hospital to assess the situation. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has expressed his condolences to the family and announced that the government will provide an ex-gratia of ₹3 Lakhs to the next of kin.
The police investigation is ongoing, with District Magistrate Dr. Kumar informing that three people have been arrested so far. The Karnataka government has promised swift action against those responsible for the tragic incident.
At least 40 students are undergoing treatment with 25 of them hailing from Meghalaya.
The incident is believed to have occurred after students consumed leftover food distributed during Holi celebrations. The school had permitted the distribution of this food, which was initially ordered by a businessman for a private event.
