Shillong, Aug 18: Meghalaya Police stunned reigning champions Langsning 2-1 at the SSA Stadium on Tuesday, registering the first major upset of the Shillong Premier League 2026.
Rapborlang Marwein did the damage for the police. He opened the scoring in the 44th minute with a curling free kick from the left that slipped straight in after a mix-up in the Langsning box left keeper Nister Roy Suting stranded.
Rapborlang then turned provider in the 89th, breaking down the right and squaring for Aldrin Ramsiej, who tapped in unmarked to make it 2-0.
Langsning, still smarting from their Durand Cup exit, pulled one back deep in stoppage time through substitute Rohan Manar in 90+3, but the champions couldn’t find an equaliser.
The police were the more aggressive side throughout. Langsning’s best first-half chances fell to Richie Kharbani — a 32nd-minute header wide and a shot saved by Eveningstar Bareh a minute later. Syed Ahmed, who netted four times in the Durand Cup, was kept quiet by the MLP backline.
Both teams rotated heavily. MLP brought in Niawkorlang Kyndiah and Balmingstar Lyngkhoi. Langsning made four changes, including Nister, Richie, Chusrang Sangma and Samuel Phawa.
The result puts Meghalaya Police on 4 points at the top after their opening 1-1 draw with Rangdajied United. Langsning remain on 3 points from their 1-0 win over Sawmer, and are now part of a six-team logjam.
Nangkiew Irat face Nongkseh at 4pm on Wednesday.
