Shillong (Meghalaya), Mar 18: In a significant move to tackle pollution, the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) has been directed to conduct a comprehensive audit and inspection of all industrial units in Byrnihat, Meghalaya. This intensive audit, ordered by the CM Conrad Sangma, must be completed within a week, with a report submitted to the Forest and Environment Department.
The move comes after the Chief Minister expressed concerns over negative global and national reports on pollution in the region. Emphasizing the need for coordinated action, the Chief Minister has urged collaboration between Assam and Meghalaya to address the issue.
A letter has been sent to the Chief Minister of Assam, highlighting the need for joint action, as most polluting industries are located on the Assam side of Byrnihat.
In response, the Assam Pollution Control Board has initiated action and steps for audit and inspection of industrial units on their side. The Meghalaya government has also shut down six industrial units in Byrnihat for failing to comply with environmental norms.
The MSPCB has been working to reduce pollution levels in Byrnihat, which has been identified as one of the most polluted areas in the country ². With this comprehensive audit and inspection, the state government aims to take decisive action against polluters and ensure a cleaner, healthier environment for its citizens.
