Shillong (Meghalaya), Mar 19: The Meghalaya State Watershed & Watershed Development Agency, under the Directorate of Soil & Water Conservation, recently organized a Watershed Yatra Awareness cum Sale of products by Self-Help Groups (SHGs). This event was part of the New Generation Watershed Development Programme under the Watershed Development Component- Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (WDC-PMKSY 2.0).
Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh, emphasized the importance of preserving water and soil, stating that it’s a shared responsibility. She highlighted the need for convergent programs involving the community, church leaders, and civil society to achieve this goal.
The Watershed Yatra aims to reach every district in the state, educating communities on the importance of protecting water resources. As Dr. Lyngdoh aptly put it, “We need to educate the communities around us so that they will protect, in the interest of everyone, the water that we receive.”
