Shillong (Meghalaya), July 11: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted the government’s commitment to the North Eastern region, particularly Meghalaya, in a press conference today. She emphasized the Centre’s focus on capital expenditure, infrastructure development, and inclusive growth under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi.
Sitharaman noted that Meghalaya received ₹48,883 crore in tax devolution between 2014 and 2024, a staggering 572% increase from the ₹7,273 crore received in the previous period. This significant boost in funding has enabled the state to undertake various development projects, improving the lives of its citizens.
The Finance Minister also highlighted the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme, under which over ₹5.3 lakh crore has been released. This scheme aims to support states in their capital investment plans, promoting economic growth and development.
Sitharaman’s announcement underscores the Centre’s commitment to the North Eastern region’s development and its efforts to bridge the gap between the region and the rest of the country.
