Shillong (Meghalaya), Jan 15: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma shared today his vision for the state’s development, addressing key issues like railway extension, tourism, and scientific mining.
On the proposed railway extension to Meghalaya, Sangma acknowledged the opposition due to concerns about influx but assured that any decision would be made in consultation with stakeholders. He emphasized the need for a thoughtful approach to balance development with the state’s unique cultural and environmental identity.
In more positive news, Sangma announced that work on the Shillong Ropeway Project is set to commence soon, a move that will boost tourism and provide a major facelift to the state’s infrastructure.
Regarding the contentious issue of implementing the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya, Sangma clarified that while the state assembly has passed a resolution in favor of ILP, the final decision rests with the Government of India. He cautioned that any implementation should be done in a way that minimizes impact on the tourism industry.
Sangma also extended an olive branch to the HNLC outfit, reiterating his government’s openness to talks and inviting them to restart the dialogue.
In a significant development, Sangma revealed that all necessary permissions have been submitted to the Ministry of Coal, paving the way for scientific mining to commence in the state soon.
With these announcements, Meghalaya is poised for progress, and CM Sangma’s vision for a developed, yet culturally sensitive, state is taking shape.
