Imphal (Manipur), July 23: Ratan Thiyam, one of India’s most influential theatre directors and playwrights, died early Wednesday morning, July 23, 2025, at the Regional Institute of Medical Science following a prolonged illness. He was 77.
Thiyam was a leading figure of the “theatre of roots” movement in Indian theatre, blending traditional Manipuri art forms with contemporary stagecraft. His innovative approach earned him widespread respect and numerous awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987 and the Padma Shri in 1989.
Thiyam’s work seamlessly combined ancient Indian theatrical traditions with modern themes, creating a unique and powerful performance language. He directed groundbreaking productions that challenged audiences and spotlighted cultural heritage. Some of his notable plays include “Andha Yug (The Blind Age)”, “Ritusamharam”, and “Uttar Priyadarshi”.
Former Manipur Chief Minister expressed “deep sorrow” upon Thiyam’s passing, describing him as a “true luminary of Indian theatre”. The artistic community mourns his loss, recognizing his irreplaceable contribution to propelling Manipuri theatre onto the global stage.
