Shillong (Meghalaya), June 5: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma participated in the World Environment Day 2025 celebrations by attending an avenue plantation drive of ornamental trees at Ummir Playground in New Shillong Township. The Chief Minister planted a tree at Umniuh Junction, emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation.
In his keynote address, CM Sangma issued a passionate call for public participation and personal accountability in environmental conservation. He highlighted the visible degradation in areas like West Khasi Hills and Mairang, urging every citizen to reflect and act. He stressed that every small action matters, such as switching off unnecessary lights, saving water, and responsible waste disposal.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the government’s efforts to combat climate change, including the plantation of over 1.84 crore saplings in the past five years and the GREEN Meghalaya+ Program, India’s largest Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) initiative. He also mentioned Mission Clean Shillong 2027, a city-wide campaign to make Shillong one of India’s cleanest cities.
The event saw the unveiling of key policy documents, including “Mission Clean Shillong 2027” and “Building a Climate-Resilient Green Economy,” which integrate solid and liquid waste management, river rejuvenation, green mobility, and urban planning under the Meghalaya Vision 2032.
