Shillong, May 14: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday flagged off 95 new police vehicles here, calling it a major push to upgrade mobility and response across Meghalaya.
The fleet, worth nearly Rs 30 crore, was launched at the Police Officers’ Mess, Golflink, with DGP I. Nongrang and senior officers present. Of the 95 vehicles, 79 were funded by the Centre under the Central Assistance to State Police Scheme.
The induction includes 20 Maruti Jimny SUVs, 19 Tata truck troop carriers, 5 Mahindra mini trucks, 36 bus troop carriers of varying capacity, and 8 Tata Yodha vehicles for the CID.
“Law and order is our most critical responsibility. Our commitment is reflected in action, not just words,” Sangma said. He cited reforms like the Police Reserve Fund and delegation of authority to SPs and unit commanders for faster execution.
The CM said over 3,000 long-vacant police posts have been filled and infrastructure in dilapidated stations is being upgraded. “Our goal is police presence in every corner, not just Shillong or headquarters,” he said.
He praised the force for its role in maintaining peace in Lapangap, West Jaintia Hills, during recent border tensions with Assam. “It is because of your courage and sacrifice that our state remains safe,” he told personnel, assuring continued government support.
DGP Idashisha Nongrang and her team were commended for leadership in maintaining stability. Officials stressed proper use and maintenance of the fleet to improve service delivery and public safety statewide.
