Shillong (Meghalaya), April 7: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma chaired the inaugural High-Level Task Force meeting on Tourism today, attended by prominent dignitaries, including DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Chief Minister Sikkim Prem Singh Tamang, Chief Minister Tripura Dr. Manik Saha, and officials from both the center and state.
The meeting focused on discussing the framework to unlock the tourism potential of Northeast India. CM Sangma emphasized that tourists globally perceive the Northeast region as a single entity, stressing the need for states to work in close coordination to facilitate tourism. He praised DoNER Minister Scindia for constituting the task force, calling it a landmark intervention to boost tourism in the region.
The discussion highlighted several key issues, including the need for a unified approach to tourism development, leveraging the region’s unique cultural and natural attractions, and addressing infrastructure gaps. The meeting also explored the possibility of studying successful tourism models from other countries, such as Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, to inform the region’s tourism strategy.
The task force, constituted by the Ministry of DoNER in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, aims to study the tourism potential of the region, suggest interventions, identify strategic gaps, recommend a roadmap for comprehensive tourism development in the region, and identify one tourism circuit in each of the eight states to attract domestic and international tourists.
