Shillong, Sept 1: A stepfather who sexually assaulted his minor stepdaughter has been sentenced to 30 years of rigorous imprisonment by a POCSO court in Shillong.
Special Judge Smti M.K. Lyngdoh on August 28 convicted Teren Mawlieh and handed down multiple sentences, the highest being 30 years RI with a fine of Rs 40,000 under Section 6 of the POCSO Act.
The case dates back to December 7, 2020, when an FIR was lodged at Mawngap police station alleging penetrative sexual assault by Mawlieh on his minor stepdaughter. Mawngap PS Case No 49(12)2020 was registered under IPC Sections 354, 354A, 354B, 376(2)(f), 376(3), 503, 506 read with POCSO provisions and the accused was arrested.
The investigation was conducted by WPSI L. Kharjana, now at Women PS, East Khasi Hills, who filed the charge sheet on February 5, 2021.
Besides the 30-year term under Section 6, the court also sentenced the convict to 20 years imprisonment with Rs 30,000 fine under Section 4, five years with Rs 10,000 fine under Section 8 and seven years with Rs 20,000 fine under Section 10 of POCSO Act. Default in payment will invite additional simple imprisonment of one to four months.
Mawlieh has already spent three years, eleven months and twenty-eight days in jail. He will now have to serve another 26 years and two days behind bars, police said.
