Guwahati(Assam). June 28 : Assam’s first flood wave has swamped six districts after 48 hours of heavy rain in the state and Arunachal Pradesh, displacing 22,124 people and leaving Dhemaji worst-hit with 15,483 residents taking shelter on highways.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority said Lakhimpur, Kokrajhar, Nalbari, Dibrugarh and Chirang are also inundated. Floodwaters have submerged 96 villages and damaged 1,690 hectares of farmland, hitting standing crops and farmer livelihoods.
The Disang River is running above the danger level at Nanglamuraghat in Sivasagar, sparking fears of wider flooding. Officials warned the Brahmaputra could turn more destructive in the next 24 hours if rain continues upstream.
Rail services between Archipathar and Simen Chapari remain suspended as a precaution. The bridge, built in 1965 and later converted to broad gauge, is structurally sound, railway officials said
