Jowai, June 29: Jaintia groups are mobilizing for a mass rally in Jowai on July 14, accusing Shree Cement and the Dolloi of Elaka Nongkhlieh of a 652-hectare land grab at Lum Syrman that has cut off farmers from their fields.
The Jaiñtia National Council and Jaiñtia Students’ Union said Saturday’s emergency meeting exposed a plan far bigger than the 217 hectares announced for Phase 1, calling it a betrayal of the Elaka. JNC President Sambormi Lyngdoh said the May 22 public hearing was forced to shut down after fierce local resistance, but the fight is far from over.
Villagers alleged the plant was moved into Daistong despite a Dorbar Elaka decision to site it at Lum Ryngksan outside village limits, blocking key farm routes. Leaders claimed land already registered in Lum Syrman was re-registered by the Dolloi, with the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council issuing fresh documents in violation of residents’ rights.
Citing JHADC rules, the groups said no NOC can be granted to any company without Dorbar and Council approval, and will march to the JHADC to demand the Dolloi’s removal and justice for landowners. They questioned Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s claim that Shree Cement followed all regulations, asking what law allows forcible seizure of Elaka land.
JNC and JSU warned MLAs and MDCs that ignoring the outcry risks unrest in the Jaintia Hills, urging all residents and NGOs to join the July 14 rally to defend land, resources, and indigenous rights.
