Shillong (Meghalaya) June 9 : Tengjrang K. Marak from Konapara in North Garo Hills has been conferred a PhD in Sociology by William Carey University for his study on the Garo tribe’s socio-cultural shift.
Under Prof. Gita Pyal, Marak examined how modernization, education, economic change, religion, technology and globalization are reshaping Garo life in North Garo Hills. His fieldwork across the district shows transformations in institutions, occupations, farming, family structures, food, dress and social bonds, even as the Garo matrilineal system and cultural identity hold strong.
The research offers new insights into tribal development and social change in Northeast India.
