Shillong (Meghalaya), Feb 4: A groundbreaking research initiative by the Department of Information Technology, North-Eastern Hill University, has led to the development of an AI-based Landslide Susceptibility Map (LSM) for Meghalaya. This innovative map identifies landslide-prone areas with an impressive accuracy of over 90%.
The LSM categorizes Meghalaya’s landslide susceptibility into five risk levels, with approximately 7% of the state falling under the very high-risk category. East Khasi Hills is the most vulnerable region, with around 730 km² at high risk. Other districts, including Ri Bhoi and Western Khasi Hills, also face significant threats.
Proximity to roads is the leading cause of landslides, followed by slope degree, soil type, and elevation. This AI-powered map will aid disaster management agencies in prioritizing resource allocation and mitigating landslide impacts.
