Shillong (Meghalaya), Feb 2: A prohibitory order has been issued in East Khasi Hills district, Shillong, banning the transportation, storage, sale, or distribution of fish illegally imported from Bangladesh without valid documents.
The order aims to curb the illegal trade, which reportedly uses various porous border points, riverine channels, and roads to smuggle fish into Meghalaya, often in pickup trucks or other vehicles operating without valid documentation.
Smugglers utilize vulnerable border belts like Shella, Lawbah, and Dawki, and transport fish to local market points and major markets in regions like Byrnihat and Guwahati.
The authorities are concerned that such unchecked imports may introduce diseased or restricted species, causing economic losses to legitimate fish traders and the state government.
Violators will face action under Section 223 of the BNS, 2023, and other relevant laws, including the Customs Act, Foreigners Act, and Passport Act. The order is effective immediately and will remain in force until further notice.
