Shillong, July 31: In a proud moment for the state, Nandini Ishvi O. Sangma, a Political Science student from Don Bosco College, Tura, represented India at the 13th Commonwealth Youth Parliament in Sydney, Australia, earlier this month.
Speaking before delegates from across the Commonwealth, Ms. Sangma delivered two thought-provoking speeches that spotlighted the state’s identity and pressed for equality, democracy and responsible use of technology.
She introduced the state through its matrilineal traditions, living root bridges, status as one of the wettest places on Earth, and reputation as the “Rock Capital of India.” Clarifying matriliny, she said lineage is traced through the mother and property passes to the youngest daughter, but the system is not about women being above men. “It reflects a unique understanding of family and community that has shaped us for generations,” she said.
Ms. Sangma also addressed gaps that remain. “Matriliny does not automatically guarantee equality,” she noted. “A society should be judged not by who holds more power, but by whether every individual has the chance to succeed.”
On global gender issues, she questioned why women in 2026 still fight for basic rights despite scientific progress. She highlighted denial of education to girls in parts of the world and the use of sexual violence in conflict, urging stronger global action for justice and human dignity.
During debate on the Artificial Intelligence and Democratic Integrity Bill 2026, she backed responsible AI. While acknowledging its potential in education, healthcare and governance, she warned: “No technology can replace human conscience, lived experience, democratic judgment, or the trust placed in elected representatives.”
Ms. Sangma’s participation was nominated by the State Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma and supported by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.
Her performance has been hailed as an inspiration for youth in the state, showing that voices from here can contribute meaningfully to global conversations.
