Shillong, July 31: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly will hold its Autumn Session for five days from August 24 to August 28, with the Business Advisory Committee on Friday approving the calendar for the proceedings.
Briefing reporters after the BAC meeting, Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma said the committee unanimously agreed on the proposed schedule. The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Parliamentary Affairs Prestone Tynsong, Leader of Opposition Mukul M. Sangma, Opposition Chief Whip Charles Pyngrope, Assembly Secretary Malthus S. Sangma and other members.
According to the approved calendar, the session will comprise three days of Government Business and two days of Private Members’ Business. The session will begin on August 24 with announcements including the BAC report and panel of chairmen, followed by laying of ordinances, notifications and reports, introduction of government bills, presentation of Supplementary Demands for Grants for 2026-2027, and obituary references.
August 25 has been earmarked for Private Members’ Bills, Motions and Resolutions, while August 26 will see voting on Supplementary Demands for Grants under Government Business. Private Members’ Bills, Resolutions and Motions are again listed for August 27. The session will conclude on August 28 with voting on Supplementary Demands, introduction, consideration and passing of the Meghalaya Appropriation (No. III) Bill, 2026, consideration and passing of government bills, and prorogation or adjournment sine die.
Addressing concerns over the limited duration, Speaker Sangma said allotment of time is always a key issue and assured that efforts would be made to give members from both treasury and opposition benches adequate opportunity to raise matters of public importance. “I will try my best to accommodate all members and ensure every member gets an opportunity to express their concerns on the floor of the House,” he said. The Speaker also confirmed that all members present, including those from the opposition, unanimously agreed to the calendar.
