Shillong, July 31: Bollywood actor and NEUFC co-owner John Abraham on Friday joined the Meghalaya government in its fight against substance abuse, calling on youth to choose fitness and discipline over drugs at the “Pulse of the Hills: Every Beat Against Drugs” programme here.
Held at the State Guest House, Taraghar, the anti-drugs awareness event was organized by the Social Welfare Department along with the Drug Reduction Elimination & Action Mission, under the patronage of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. Adviser to Social Welfare Paul Lyngdoh attended as Chief Guest.
In an interactive session with students, Abraham spoke candidly about staying away from negative influences. He thanked CM Sangma, describing him as “one of the nicest human beings,” and said he holds deep affection for Shillong and the Northeast. Calling the region a “hotbed of football,” he announced that his new football academy will be ready in the next two years and expressed hope to see “a Ronaldo or a Messi coming from the Northeast.”
Lyngdoh said the state is witnessing rapid progress with the upcoming academy, construction of India’s biggest stadium in Shillong, and major investments in youth and social sectors. “The region is poised for a future brighter than the sun,” he said.
The event also saw the launch of a vehicle dedicated to Asha Bhavan Rehab Centre, Tura, to support the state’s drug reduction initiatives. Abraham was felicitated alongside Recovery Champions and the state’s youngest recovery champion.
Social Welfare Director Saloni Verma said the programme reflects the government’s commitment through DREAM, launched in 2022, with focus on prevention, recovery and hope. She urged youth to draw inspiration from Abraham’s dedication to fitness.
The programme featured recovery testimonies, a fitness talk, and a musical performance, and concluded with dignitaries and participants taking a pledge at “The Dream Wall of Commitment” for a drug-free Meghalaya.
