Shillong (Meghalaya), Oct 2: Meghalaya’s Health and Family Welfare department observed Swachh Bharat Divas with the inauguration of the Faecal Sludge and Septage Treatment Plant.
PM Narendra Modi virtually presided over the event, while Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Agriculture, participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The plant, set up under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), aims to enhance sanitation and cleanliness in Shillong. Dr. Lyngdoh emphasized the significance of proper waste management and its impact on public health.
“This initiative aligns with our commitment to creating a cleaner, healthier Meghalaya,” Dr. Lyngdoh stated. “The plant will treat faecal sludge and septage from households and institutions, significantly enhancing sanitation and cleanliness in Shillong.”
The plant is a crucial step towards achieving a Swachh Bharat. Located in Shillong, it contributes to the Swachh Bharat Mission and reinforces Meghalaya’s dedication to environmental sustainability.
PM Modi highlighted the importance of such initiatives during the virtual inauguration. “With this plant, we take a crucial step towards achieving a Swachh Bharat,” he said.
The event was part of the nationwide Swachh Bharat Diwas celebrations, marking the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
