Shillong (Meghalaya), Oct 2: Defying heavy rain, over 1,500 Shillong residents participated in the 5.5 km Swachhata Run, hosted by Raj Bhavan, Central Bureau of Communication (CBC) Shillong, and East Khasi Hills District Sports Department. The event aimed to raise awareness about cleanliness and promote the Central Government’s Swachhata Hi Seva initiative.
Governor of Meghalaya, C. H. Vijayashankar, flagged off the run, praising the massive turnout. “This event showcases the community’s commitment to cleanliness and a healthier environment,” he said.
The run started from Raj Bhavan, passing through various landmarks, and ended back at Raj Bhavan. Winners were awarded in the men’s and women’s categories. The winners were Men’s Category: Daniel L Walang (1st), Nahtei Wangnao (2nd), Dasaman Khyndait (3rd) and in Women’s Category: Marqueenless Ramsiej (1st), Phyrnai Khyndait (2nd), Dapliss Wahlang (3rd)
The event also included a tree plantation drive, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, and a Gandhi Jayanti celebration. Editor of The Shillong Times, Smt. Patricia Mukhim, emphasized integrating cleanliness into daily life.
The Governor awarded prizes to winners of essay writing and art competitions organized by CBC Shillong and National Book Trust of India. He also flagged off a mobile library and exhibited handlooms, weaving tools, and Khadi products.
Meghalaya Minister for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, AL Hek, and senior officials from state and central governments participated in the day-long program.
“This event demonstrates our commitment to Swachhata Hi Seva and Gandhi’s vision for a cleaner India,” said Governor Vijayashankar.
The Swachhata Run and associated events reinforced Shillong’s dedication to cleanliness, community service, and environmental conservation.
