Tura(Meghalaya), June 23: Various NGOs from South Garo Hills (SGH) have written to the chief minister, Conrad Sangma seeking the establishment of the 7th Meghalaya battalion in the town of Baghmara.
The NGOs, which included the GSU, FKJGP and ADE through their letter mentioned that land for the battalion camp had already been allocated and was ready for processing.
“With SGH being densely forested, the area has become notorious for becoming sage heaven for insurgents. Moreover many surrendered militants remain jobless and the institution could have some sort of employment for them. Further despite being one of the oldest districts, we require such infrastructure as we don’t have them,” said the NGOs.
The NGOs added that with the district being close to the international border with Bangladesh, militants like Sohan D Shira and Drishti Rajkhowa had easy access and were able to spread terror.
“In view of such circumstances and our district being vulnerable, we seek the expeditious work on the battalion headquarter in Baghmara,” they said.
