Guwahati, Oct 9: In a major upset, the BJP wrested the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat from the Congress in the by-election, with Congress relegated to a distant third.
As per ECI trends, BJP’s Devasish Sharma led with 6,91,804 votes, holding a decisive margin of 1,57,804 votes over AIUDF’s Badruddin Ajmal (5,34,000 votes). Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora polled only 1,24,081 votes.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the result in a non-traditional BJP seat reflects PM Narendra Modi’s pan-community popularity and people’s faith in ‘Viksit Bharat’. He thanked Nagaon voters and lauded party workers under President Nitin Nabin.
The win marks a significant political shift in central Assam, where Nagaon with its diverse electorate was considered a Congress stronghold.
