Shillong, Oct 1: Shillong Lajong produced a statement win in the Shillong Premier League 2026, downing defending champions Langsning 2-0 at SSA Stadium on Thursday to storm back to the top.
Iohborlang L Lyngkhoi broke the deadlock with a stunning free kick right on half-time, clipping the upright on its way in, before Freddy Jyrwa put the result beyond doubt in the 80th minute as Langsning coughed up possession at the back.points
The victory takes Lajong to 17 points, one ahead of Langsning who have also played eight. Mawlai, on 15 from seven, are now right in the hunt. Langsning have only one game left against fourth-placed Nongkseh and will need favours from elsewhere to retain the crown.
Played in front of a roaring crowd, the high-stakes clash was fast, feisty and full of chances. Rajat Paul Lyngdoh kept Langsning alive early with a brave block to deny Colinsalmon Lyngdoh, while Lajong’s Wilbert Marbaniang fluffed two sitters set up by Freddy. Riborlang L Lyngkhoi struck the crossbar in the 42nd minute, before Iohborlang made the breakthrough.
Langsning came out firing after the break but found Lajong keeper Lakpa Lama in fine form. Kyrmenskhem Mukhim, Donlad Diengdoh and Samuel Phawa were all denied, with Samuel crashing a left-footer against the bar and Richie Kharbani firing just wide in stoppage time.
At the other end, Rajat Paul produced a superb diving save to tip Badondor Marbaniang’s header onto the post, before being beaten by Freddy’s late strike that crept over the line despite getting a hand to it.
The drama continues on Friday when third-placed Mawlai take on seventh-placed Sawmer at 3 pm, a game that could once again shake up the title race.
