Shillong(Meghalaya) Jan 11: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is seeking action on reports of coal being illegally transported in parts of the state and has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to act accordingly.
Conrad has directed the DGP, R. Chandranathan to in turn instruct the Superintendents of Police (SPs) to act on these reports. An inquiry has also been ordered into alleged illegal collection at Dainadubi check gates in Garo Hills.
Speaking to reporters CM Conrad said that he has convened a meeting with the DGP and discussed the matter related to allegations of illegal transportation of coal in the State.
“The DGP has been advised to initiate necessary measures to curtail such movements and take immediate action in the matter. The DGP told me that necessary instructions will be passed on to all SPs concerned and strict action will be taken against any such activity if so found,” Conrad said while adding that he has directed the DGP to ensure that if such activity is found to be taking place, action must be immediately taken.
On alleged illegal collection at Dainadubi check gates, Conrad informed that an order has been issued where an inquiry committee has been constituted.
Sources said that the committee has been given 10 days time to complete the inquiry.
It may be mentioned that there were reports which alleged that at Dainadubi in North Garo Hills district, on the night of December 30, 2019 at least Rs. 26000 illegal tax was collected from around 225 coal laden trucks.
The youth wing of the United Democratic Party (UDP) an ally in the MDA coalition government has sought a judicial inquiry into the illegal collection.
