Shillong (Meghalaya), Mar 17: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today inaugurated the state’s first scientific mining coal block at the ‘Saryngkham-A’ Coal Mine in Byndihati, East Jaintia Hills District. The inauguration marks a significant milestone in Meghalaya’s journey towards sustainable mining practices.
The event was attended by Cabinet Minister Kyrmen Shylla, Sutnga-Saipung MLA Santa Mary Shylla, and other dignitaries. Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Sangma congratulated all stakeholders involved in making this project a reality.
This development comes after the central government signed agreements with three miners in Meghalaya to begin scientific coal mining in the state, following a 10-year ban on unscientific “rat-hole mining” by the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
The scientific mining coal block is expected to boost the state’s economy while ensuring environmental sustainability. With this inauguration, Meghalaya takes a significant step towards responsible mining practices, setting a precedent for other states to follow.
