Gondenggre (West Garo Hills), Oct 24: The traditional Wangala Festival was celebrated with great religious fervour by non-Christian Garos at Gondenggre village in West Garo Hills today.
Gondenggre, a multiple-time Wangala Champion and known for preserving authentic Wangala traditions, witnessed a record turnout this year, bigger than previous editions.
Wangala, the thanksgiving festival of the Garos offered to Misi Saljong, the Sun God, for a bountiful harvest, was celebrated as per age-old customs. Prayers were first offered at the residence of the Nokma, the village headman, followed by the traditional dance in the courtyard of his house.
Men, women and children in colourful traditional attire danced to the rhythmic beats of dama and rang, expressing joy, unity and gratitude.
The highlight this year was the enthusiastic participation of young children. The village has been consciously involving children to ensure the rich heritage is preserved and passed on to future generations.
Celebrated with deep faith by the non-Christian section of the Garo community, the festival once again showcased the vibrant cultural identity and deep connection of the Garos with nature.
