Shillong (Meghalaya), June 24: The Shillong High Court has taken a strong stance on the issue of illegal tree felling in the state, directing a State Level Committee to verify reports and take action. The court’s directive comes in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) that initially sought orders to stop illegal tree felling in and around the Lower New Colony area, Laitumkhrah, but was later expanded to cover the entire East Khasi Hills District.
The court expressed deep concern and shock over allegations of large-scale tree felling in the Lawsohtun area and took suo motu cognizance of the development. The State Level Committee, comprising the Chief Conservator of Forests (T), Shillong, Dr. Krishna Upadhaya, and the Secretary, Forests and Environment Department, Government of Meghalaya, has been directed to immediately call for a report from the concerned Divisional Forest Officer regarding the allegations.
The court also directed the Committee to verify the reports of Divisional Forest Officers and take decisions based on the truth of the assertions. No tree felling or branch lopping will be permitted unless the Committee is satisfied that the tree poses an imminent danger to life or property. The respondents are required to file a further status report by July 18, and the PIL will be listed again on July 22.
