Umiam (Meghalaya ), May 29: The 3rd YAI North East Regatta 2025 has successfully concluded at Umiam Lake here, showcasing the region’s vibrant sailing talent. The five-day event, held from May 24 to 29, featured 79 sailors from nine top sailing clubs across India, including 25 women and nine novices.
Organized by the Umiam Sailing Club in collaboration with the UDAY Sailing Foundation, the regatta was backed by the Yachting Association of India (YAI) and supported by the International 420 Class Association of India. The event played a critical role in identifying and grooming potential candidates for the 2026 Asian Games, with performances significantly impacting National Squad selections.
Lt Gen TSA Narayanan, AVSM, Vice President of YAI, praised the growing momentum of sailing in the region, highlighting the focus on creating a professional yet sailor-friendly environment. Dr. Vijay Kumar D., IAS, Commissioner and Secretary of the Department of Tourism and Chairman of Umiam Sailing Club, emphasized the state government’s long-term vision for sustainable tourism integrated with economic development. Umiam Lake has been earmarked as a permanent hub for water sports, including rowing and sailing, particularly with Meghalaya set to host the National Games in 2027 .
The regatta featured competitions in five categories across 11 classes, with international judges, certified race officers, and a national measurer ensuring world-class standards. Paul Lyngdoh, Tourism Minister, congratulated the sailors, organizing team, and members of the Uday Sailing Foundation, noting that the event is growing each year .
