Shillong (Meghalaya), April 2 : In a groundbreaking achievement, Meghalaya’s iconic Ryndia fabric, along with Meghalaya Handloom Products, has secured the coveted Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This prestigious recognition is a testament to the state’s rich cultural heritage and its commitment to preserving traditional textiles.
The Ryndia, a handwoven, handspun, naturally dyed, organically produced, and ethically sourced fabric, has been a cornerstone of Meghalaya’s indigenous textiles. With the GI tag, the state aims to protect the authenticity of the weave, promote local weavers, and showcase the unique cultural identity of Meghalaya.
The Department of Textiles, Government of Meghalaya, played a pivotal role in securing the GI tag, with support from NABARD and technical assistance from Dr. Rajnikanth. The joint efforts of the Textiles Department and the Meghalaya Ryndia Producers Association have finally paid off, marking a new chapter in the state’s textile industry.
