Shillong (Meghalaya), Feb 14: In a momentous ceremony, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma received the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) flag from Union Home Minister Amit Shah and IOA Chairperson PT Usha, marking the official handover of the 39th National Games to Meghalaya. This prestigious event is slated to take place in early 2027, coinciding with the state’s 55th year of statehood.
The Meghalaya delegation, led by Chief Minister Sangma, included prominent officials and athletes. The state’s preparations for the event are already underway, with nearly 40 sports identified for consideration. The games will be hosted in all three major cities of Meghalaya – Shillong, Tura, and Jowai – with an estimated 12,000 athletes participating.
This development comes on the heels of Meghalaya’s successful campaign at the ongoing 38th National Games in Uttarakhand, where the state’s athletes won five medals. The IOA’s decision to award the 39th National Games to Meghalaya is a testament to the state’s commitment to promoting sports and its capability to host a prestigious multi-sport event.
