Tura(Meghalaya), Aug 23: GHADC MDC from Boldamgre in South West Garo Hills (SWGH) has written to the deputy commissioner of the district highlighting the banking woes of the people near the Kalaichar area due to the SBI branch being out of function for over a month.
In a letter to the DC, MDC Stevie Marak said that the village which is a part of the Boldamgre constituency faces a problem of extremely poor network connectivity. The defunct bank has added to the problems of the people as well. The village of Kalaichar lies close to the border with Bangladesh.
“A majority of the people don’t have access to ATM cards which means that most of them transact through manual means. Due to the bank not working, people have been unable to transact. Further the lack of other banks has led to problems for students who are desperate to pay their fees online for admission sessions that are about to begin. This has put a question mark on their future,” said Stevie.
Simultaneously, Stevie said that the telecom network coverage in the area is extremely poor and unreliable.
“Students are suffering due to the poor network connectivity as their online classes are severely hampered,” he added.
The MDC, through the complaint asked the DC to immediately look into the two issues and ensure that the SBI branch reopens and the network issues are worked out.
The MDC met the DC along with a group of affected Nokmas of the area as well local leaders of the Ampati region.
