Shillong ( Meghalaya), Aug 23 : Three INSAS rifles which were stolen from Mawkynroh-Umshing outpost on Aug 15 last have been recovered today from Wah Umkhrah by the Search & Rescue Team (SRT) of the Fire & Emergency Services and the District Police of East Khasi Hills.
On Aug 20 last an anonymous letter was sent to the Headman of Mawlai Town Dorbar stating that the 3 INSAS rifles snatched from police of Mawkynroh police outpost were thrown in the river at Umpohliew bridge, Jaiaw Laitdom, Jaiaw-Polo link road.
Meanwhile ,state police in a statement wholeheartedly expressed its sincere gratitude to the Rangbah Shnong of Mawlai Town Dorbar and Dorbar Shnong Jaiaw Pyllun for their continuous support.
The snatching of the weapons had taken place on Aug 15 last during the funeral of the former General Secretary Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew, who was shot dead by police at his residence on Aug13 .
A police vehicle (black Scorpio) belonging to Mawkynroh outpost was also set ablaze at Jaiaw locality of the city .
A group of youths after snatching the weapons of the police personnel who had left their rifles and had gone to take food seized the black Scorpio and and drove through the city brandishing the arms before setting it ablaze in Jaiaw area of the city .
Subsequently the four police personnel who had deserted their weapons were suspended and an inquiry has been instituted against them .
The State Rescue Team (SRT) of the Meghalaya Fire and Emergency Services and the District Police have today recovered the 3 INSAS rifles at Wah Umkhrah that were seized at Umshing-Mawkynroh Police Outpost on August 15th.@MeghalayaPolice pic.twitter.com/v4BhfseFLN
