Tura, Oct 12: P A Sangma Model Degree College, Darugre in Rongjeng is running headless and penniless – and the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) says enough is enough.
In a strongly worded representation through the Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Tura to the Directorate of Higher and Technical Education, Shillong, the GSU Central Executive Committee, HQ Tura has revealed that the college has had no Principal since August 31, 2026, while teaching and non-teaching staff have not been paid for five months.
The complaint, received from the teaching staff themselves, states that the leadership vacuum has paralysed administration, delayed exam preparations and blocked scholarship documents – directly hitting students from rural East Garo Hills.
“Families are struggling to meet daily expenses and young people whose future depends on access to education are left uncertain,” the GSU said.
Slamming the apathy, the union questioned: “If education is a priority, why has this college been left facing an essential leadership vacancy while employees report five months of unpaid wages?”
The GSU, under President Zikku Balgra N Marak and General Secretary Bibian G Momin, has demanded immediate appointment of a permanent Principal for at least five years, with proven expertise in academic administration, staff management, student welfare and government procedures, and a clear vision for institutional development.
It has urged the government to act immediately and requested the DC West Garo Hills to forward the matter to DHTE on priority, with copies marked to the Chief Minister, Education Minister and Education Commissioner & Secretary.
