Shillong, Aug 15: Lok Bhawan hosted a grand ‘At Home’ reception Friday to mark India’s 80th Independence Day, celebrating the nation’s heritage with music, dance, food and local pride.
Governor C.H. Vijayashankar hosted the event, with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed and senior officials in attendance. The evening was themed on ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat 2047’.
After inspecting stalls and taking the National Salute with the Meghalaya Police Band, the Governor inaugurated the cultural programme. Artists from across the country performed alongside Meghalaya troupes. The show opened with ‘Vande Mataram’ and featured Jagarna from Jammu, Rouf from Kashmir, Bhawai from Rajasthan, Bharatnatyam from Karnataka and a Bengal-themed piece by Gitanjalee Dance Academy.
Meghalaya’s heritage shone through the Ka Shad Mastieh warrior dance of the Khasis, Chad Kheit Soh of the Jaintias and Wangala harvest dance of the Garos. The Assam Rifles Jazz Band added patriotic tunes.
The Governor also honoured local achievers — Lynti Rynghang of Ri Bhoi for woodcraft, Norma R. Lakiang of East Khasi Hills for bonsai, and Dirot Chambugong Marak of West Garo Hills for traditional instruments. Flower show titles went to Kyntonsing Kharkongor and Sumarlin Lyngdoh.
Exhibits by PRIME Meghalaya, MSAMB and MEGNOLIA highlighted organic farming, mushrooms, orchids and handicrafts.
Lok Bhawan will be open to the public today from 1:30 PM to 8:00 PM and on August 16 from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
