Shillong, Aug 15: The state marked the 80th Independence Day with flag hoistings, parades and cultural programmes held simultaneously across all districts and civil sub-divisions.
In Tura, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui hoisted the National Flag at Matchakolgre L.P. School Playground and took the salute of 24 contingents. Pechon Memorial Secondary School Boys secured the top spot in the NCC category, while St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School won among Scouts and Guides. Nine HSSLC and SSLC toppers and 21 employees were honoured for academic and public service. The celebrations also featured tug-of-war, a pineapple eating competition and a blood donation camp.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar hoisted the flag at Rongrenggre Government Higher Secondary School Playground in Williamnagar and reviewed 30 contingents. The day included cultural performances, children’s sports and a friendly football match. In Ampati, MLA Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar led 35 contingents and released a tourism booklet for South West Garo Hills.
Deputy CM Prestone Tynsong took the salute in Resubelpara, while Speaker Thomas A. Sangma did the honours in Jowai where PM Shri JNV Mukhla won the march past. Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla presided over Khliehriat and Agriculture Minister Timothy D. Shira gave Bravery and Best Teacher Awards in Nongstoin, along with recognition for three best-performing PHCs.
Border Areas Development Minister Brening A. Sangma led Mawkyrwat, where ASHAs were felicitated and an annual swimming competition was held. Similar celebrations with march pasts, awards and cultural shows were organised in Nongpoh, Mairang, Sohra, Dadenggre, Amlarem, Pynursla, Ranikor, Chokpot, Rongjeng, Jengjal, Dalu, Raksamgre, Patharkhmah, Mawshynrut and Shangpung, reflecting unity and pride as the state marked 80 years of Independence
