Shillong, June 30: Meghalaya’s Committee on Petitions took its outreach straight to the people Tuesday, holding an awareness programme in Rajabala to hear grievances on power supply and road woes.
The session at Batabari C&RD Block, West Garo Hills, was chaired by Committee Chairman and MLA Pongseng R. Marak. MLAs Sanjay Sangma, Charles Marngar, Brightstarwell Marbaniang, Remington Gabil Momin, and Dr. Mizanur Rahman Kazi joined Assembly officials, Nokmas, VEC members, NGOs, students, and residents.
Marak said the programme aimed to educate citizens on how the Committee works as a bridge between the public and government. Locals flagged two urgent issues: MeECL’s functioning and poor road connectivity.
Residents alleged overbilling and erratic supply by SAI Computers, the local power distributor. They also slammed the crumbling stretch of NH-127B connecting Phulbari, Rajabala, and Selsella.
Dr. Mizanur Rahman Kazi called the Committee a key redressal forum when other channels fail. He urged students to participate, calling them “future agents of positive change.”
The panel assured that all complaints would be examined and recommendations sent to the government. After the event, members stayed back to interact directly with residents and listen to more grievances.
