Washington/New Delhi, June 15: An unconfirmed report circulated Friday claims the United States and Iran have reached an agreement to end hostilities in West Asia and reopen the Strait of Hormuz to shipping.
According to the report attributed to sources close to the negotiations, the deal would include removal of mines from the waterway and an end to the US naval blockade. US President Donald Trump was cited in the report as calling it a “major breakthrough” on social media, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was said to have welcomed steps toward restoring peace and freedom of navigation in the region.
As of now, neither the US government nor Iranian officials have issued official confirmation of the agreement, and major news agencies have not independently verified the claims.
The Strait of Hormuz handles a large share of global oil shipments, and any changes to its status are typically announced through official diplomatic channels.
