Shillong Aug 14: On the eve of Independence Day, Northeast Development Initiative, NEDI, has announced expansion of cold-storage infrastructure and skill programs across the region under its commitment to “Saluting India by Building the Northeast.”
NEDI, an initiative of ABK Media India Pvt. Ltd., will set up new fish and livestock cold-storage facilities in Jowai and Mairang. The move follows the inauguration of its first facility at Mawblei, Shillong, in May 2026 by Timothy D. Shira, Minister in charge of Fisheries, Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Tourism, Government of Meghalaya.
Each facility is aimed at linking farmers, fish and livestock producers, transporters, distributors and retailers to a modern value chain closer to their communities.
Beyond storage, NEDI is focusing on skilling. In collaboration with Don Bosco Technical School, Shillong, it has launched training in cold-storage construction, installation, operation and maintenance to equip youth for jobs in the growing cold-chain sector.
The organization is also working on better connectivity and tourism. Plans include developing helipad infrastructure to support future charter and helicopter services in Meghalaya, and setting up an Indigenous Ornamental Fish Underwater Aquarium and Experience Centre in Shillong to boost biodiversity awareness and tourism.
NEDI has also published “North East Connect” by Somjit Dutta, which has received appreciation from the National Defence Academy, Pune.
