Shillong (Meghalaya), June 16: The Northeast positioned itself as India’s next big growth corridor as NEIINFRA 2026 concluded today at the Lariti Complex, New Shillong. Organised by the Government of Meghalaya with the Federation of Industry and Commerce of North East Region and the Build India Foundation, the two-day summit laid out a roadmap for infrastructure, tourism, MSMEs, green energy and next-generation technology across the eight states.
Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said the region has shifted from uncertainty to absolute confidence and growth. He credited over ₹6 lakh crore in public development spending in the last decade, including ₹69,000 crore in roads, digital links and rail projects, for turning the Northeast into a zone of opportunity and strategic weight. The future of India’s growth story cannot be complete without the northeastern states, he said, adding that for him it begins from the Northeast.
Addressing the summit virtually, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said the region is moving from being the abode of clouds to the abode of opportunities. With GDP growth at 13 percent, double the national average, he outlined aviation milestones that include more operational airports, major upgrades for Shillong Airport, and the upcoming Tura Airport. The new UDAN scheme will build at least one heliport in every district to connect communities, lift tourism and unlock local economies. The time has come to change the narrative from Why North East to Why not North East, he said.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said the summit marks a new chapter for Meghalaya, with the state now moving beyond basic infrastructure to focus on industries and long-term jobs. He promised a transparent ecosystem for investors, businesses and local entrepreneurs, thanked the Centre for swift clearances and major financial commitments, and described Meghalaya as one of the safest destinations in the country. He urged visitors to take back stories of the state’s natural beauty and hospitality.
Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed said the runway is clear for a collective take-off towards prosperity. He noted more than 60 visits by the Prime Minister and 700 visits by Union ministers in the last decade as proof of the Centre’s commitment. He proposed treating tourism infrastructure as sovereign capital, scaling Meghalaya’s 70 percent homestay subsidy model across states, and adding budget travel options to push community-based tourism.
Commissioner and Secretary, Public Works Department, Sanjay Goyal said real prosperity depends on the states growing as complementary partners. The Northeast, he said, has the vision, talent and resources to become one of India’s most dynamic economic regions through strong partnerships and implementation.
Three reports were released at the event. The Vision Report 2047 Ashtalakshmi sets a path for the eight northeastern states to become modern and prosperous. A Tourism Infrastructure Report and a Knowledge Report on development, industrial infrastructure, aviation and airports were also unveiled.
Exhibitors were recognised for standout displays. Dak-ti Craft led the MSME category for engagement, followed by Naira Travels and Nela Handlooms. Among main exhibitors, Jubilant eSport and Allied Safety Equipment won for high-energy showcases, while Canboo was named Champion Exhibitor for presentation and excellence.
Day one had opened with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari as Chief Guest, alongside Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio. The inaugural session drew over 1,500 delegates, eight Union Ministries, and all eight northeastern states. A ₹39,800 crore infrastructure package for Meghalaya was announced, with Sangma calling the summit the start of a long partnership between government, private sector and people for collective growth.
Meghalaya sees NEIINFRA 2026 as more than a summit. It is the launch pad for long-term public-private partnerships that can turn regional challenges into opportunities and make the Northeast a key driver of Viksit Bharat 2047.
